Radiant Skin & Makeup
Text by: Aimee Saling
WomanWe often begin planning our weddings months, if not years, in advance. We book photographers, buy dresses, and plan hairstyles. Don’t forget the manicure, pedicure, and waxing. However, some of us neglect to make sure our skin and makeup look its best. During this stressful time of planning the perfect day, our skin can become stressed and dull. Makeup applications aren’t usually at the top of our priority list. But let’s face it: your face will be in the pictures that you will someday show to your children and grandchildren. Shouldn’t it look perfect?

Here are ten easy-to-follow tips that will help guide you in the right direction:

1. Let the pros help.
To ensure a flawless complexion, we suggest consulting with a licensed esthetician for hydrating and firming masks. To help with acne or dull dry skin, ask about a light exfoliating facial. We do not recommend abrasive chemical peels, as these can sometimes make matters worse. Exfoliating facials help remove dead skin and allow healthy skin cells to shine through. Be aware that facials can cause unwanted toxins to come through to the new layer of skin, which can lead to breakouts. Not to worry, this is normal; just be sure to schedule your facials at least two weeks prior to the big day allowing your skin the needed time to clear up.

2. Be yourself.
It is important that you feel comfortable and wear feature-enhancing makeup. Your wedding day is not the time to try trendy, complicated, and distracting looks. When hiring a professional make-up artist, do a trial run a month in advance to make sure she or he captures your most natural look. Be sure to take pictures to document the make-up application and bring those with you the day of the wedding. If you decide to do your own makeup, practice weekly to ensure that the application goes on without a hitch.

3. Preparation.
Always prepare your skin well before applying foundation. Begin with a clean moisturized face. If you are planning an outside wedding, you may want to consider a moisturizer and foundation with an SPF 15. After you moisturize, apply a foundation primer. Primers help hide any unwanted redness and will keep your face looking fresh throughout the day. Don’t skimp on foundations, concealors or primers. It is important to consult with a professional at a cosmetics counter to ensure a perfect match. You may pay a little extra for the products, but don’t you deserve the best?

4. Something borrowed, something blue.
Your something blue should not be your dark circles under your eyes. Planning for your big day may cause some unwanted fatigue. Be sure to get plenty of rest and drink LOTS of water. Sleeping with your head elevated will help minimize dark circles. Again, consult with an artist at a retail counter to find a concealor that matches your skin tone. A shade too dark will make circles more prominent, and one too light will give an unnatural look. Apply sparingly with a synthetic concealor brush, paying close attention to the innermost corners of your eyes near the bridge of your nose, the outer corners of your eye, and close to the bottom lash line. These areas are where shadows are most prominent; too much concealor will emphasize bagginess or emphasize wrinkles.

5. The blushing bride.
As the blushing bride, you want to obtain a fresh, flushed look on your cheeks. Cream blush is ideal for a natural subtle cheek. Powder blush tends to look overdone or obvious on top of foundation. To apply cream blush, choose a healthy shade that matches your natural rosy or pink undertones. Think about how you look after a good workout and use that as a guideline for color and placement. Before setting your foundation with powder, apply cream blush with your fingertips beginning at the apple of your cheek and blend back towards your hairline. Set blush, foundation, and concealor with a light dusting of loose powder.
6. Smudge-proof eyes.
Search for two or more different brands of waterproof eye mascara and put them to the test. Apply two coats of mascara to top lashes only mascara on bottom lashes tends to close the eye in. Once dry, splash water on your face to check for durability. This will prove how the mascara will stand up to many happy tears to come. If you want an alternative to mascara, check with your favorite salon and ask about lash tinting. This is an easy and long-lasting way to have extraordinary lashes without the hassle of mascara.

7. No frosting.
Leave the frosty eye shadows for the nights out on the town. Frosted eye shadows tend to create shine in photographs and can lead to a very unnatural appearance. They tend to emphasize wrinkles and also crease. Stick with neutral shadows such as bone and cream and use them just below the brow line. This will give eyes definition and make them stand out.

8. Brows, brows, brows.
Someone once said that your eyebrows are the picture frames to your face. Because they are one of your most important features, it is a good idea to have them professionally waxed two or three days before the wedding to reduce any redness that may occur. Plucking your brows can cause them to look uneven or give the appearance of being too thick or too thin. Ask friends and family members for recommendations on who they have used locally with favorable results.

9. Soft kissable lips
Everyone wants soft kissable lips on their wedding day. Here is how to achieve that goal: apply some Vaseline on top and bottom lips, and using a children’s soft bristle toothbrush, rub gently in circular motions to exfoliate and remove dead skin. Olive oil and almond oil are two great substitutes for lip therapy. They moisturize your lips without the heavy wax found in regular chap sticks.

10. Relax and enjoy.
Now that you have all the necessary rules for the perfect makeup application, and skin care tips, relax and enjoy the day you have dreamed about since you were a little girl. Remember that less is best. Never focus on the runway or Hollywood look, but wear makeup that is both natural and enhancing to your best features.
